Lab Created Diamonds are an Affordable Alternative to Mined Diamonds

Looking for the perfect diamond ring that’s within your budget is never an easy endeavor. There is a large variety of rings to choose from, with different stones, shapes and styles, the choices are never ending. If you’ve been searching for a ring for a while you may notice there being natural diamond rings and lab-created (lab-grown) diamond rings.

To answer the question you’re probably thinking right now: YES! Lab-created diamonds are real diamonds. But what makes them considered an equal to a natural diamond, and why are lab-created diamonds a lot more cheaper?

How Are Lab Created Diamonds Created?

Firstly, let’s learn about natural diamonds. A naturally occurring diamond formed far beneath the Earth’s surface. Several years of intense heat and pressure cause a certain element, carbon to rearranged on an atomic level and take a solid form which is what we know as a diamond. Deep-source volcanic eruptions help send these stones closer to the surface, these craters are usually mined for diamond. Natural diamonds are pricey because of their rarity, there is thought to be a finite amount of this stone on the planet and the circumstances which each diamond is created are unique. Other aspects that contribute to their high cost are the labor and energy that goes into mining and polishing these stones. Let’s not forget the strategic control and advertising in the diamond market itself.

On the other hand, lab-grown diamonds are well, grown in a lab. The most common way a diamond is created is through a process call chemical vapor deposition. You take a slim slice of a diamond call a “seed” that already has a formed a diamond crystalline structure and place it in a reactors’ chamber. A carbon rich “plasma cloud” then interacts with heat to start growth. Using this process, a diamond growth cycles vary by size. It can take over a month of uninterrupted growth by depositing carbon, atom by atom to complete the diamond. Because a diamond created in a lab is pure carbon with the same crystalline structure chemically speaking, it is the exact sae as a natural diamond but created quicker and cheaper!

Another diamond creating process is called High Temperature - High Pressure (HTHP) method. This method has been used by General Electric(GE) since 1954 . Read more about the lab-grown diamond process, the differences of a natural and lab-created diamond and more here

Lab-Created Diamonds Better than Natural Diamonds?

It is said that a lab-created diamond can reach up to 50% less than a natural stone of a similar grade. How is that so? First of all natural and lab-created diamonds are not controlled by the same supply chains and almost dubious marketing strategies and advertising natural diamonds have. Technology is rabidly evolving and if lab-grown diamonds become easier to create and

reduce their cost even more then a lab-created diamond’s price will likely go down further.

A little fun fact, lab-created diamonds are one of the rarest form of diamonds being type-IIa are the purest form of diamonds in the world. Lab-created diamonds are virtually devoid of nitrogen, the chief impurity found in diamonds. Only 2% of the world’s mined diamond are Type-IIa compared.

Diamonds are known to be the hardest material on earth. They are a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and do not chip or scratch easily. Lab-created diamonds are created with the same material, carbon and with the same crystalline structure as a natural formed diamond. So the durability of a lab-created diamond is the same as a natural diamond.

Clarity grades for lab-created diamonds are evaluated the same as you would a natural diamond. A lab-created diamonds are grown, they will also take on flaws, or inclusions as a natural diamond would. These Inclusions will a affect a stone’s sparkle making the stone appear cloudy. The more cloudy the stone appears, the lower it’s clarity grade becomes. Clarity grades for lab-grown diamonds range from Flawless (F1) to Included (I3).

The color of a natural diamond and a lab-created diamond will be graded on the same scale. There is no visual difference between the two kinds of diamond. As mentioned earlier, they are both real, pure diamonds just created in different ways! The color grades of diamonds are graded D to F which are considered true colorless diamonds. These are extremely rare and are highly valued. Most seek out diamonds graded between G and J which are near colorless but a lot more affordable.
